Thompson Festival of the Arts is a celebration of the enthusiasm and efforts our youth put into the arts. Since 1966, the Thompson Festival of the Arts has been operating as a non profit volunteer driven organization dedicated to supporting opportunities for artistic growth and arts appreciation.

Over the years TFA has welcomed talented students of the arts to perform in five disciplines; piano and other musical instruments; vocal/choral; dance; speech arts and visual arts. Students can participate in non competitive and competitive performances. Many sponsors have generously provided trophies, plaques and scholarships as annual awards for participation and as recognition of excellence.

The Visual Arts discipline is very strong. We encourage artists of all ages and talents to express themselves and to show something of their imagination and love of art. Students put together their art as a classroom, group or individual entry. Non Competitive entries come from students in Kindergarten to Grade 6. Students in Grade 7- Senior 4 offer competitive entries that are considered for available awards and scholarships. Adults have also participated and are eligible for adjudication only.

Each year we are treated to imaginative creative works. Students can chose to create drawings in pencil, coloured pencil, pen and ink, charcoal or pastels; they can paint in watercolour, acrylic and oils. They can combine all kinds of mediums and make wonderful collages and mixed media works; they can make puppets, create from cloth, paper mache and clay or carve from soapstone and wood. Fibre arts, ceramics, printmaking, photography, video/film and computer art can also be entered. There are additional ideas within the AMAF syllabus (available at all the schools – see pages 297-305) Each year students hear about the festival through TFA representatives at their school and are encouraged to fill out registration forms. There are forms for visual arts, dance and other disciplines music/choral/speech arts.

For certain disciplines students have to make specific choices about their works/performances In the Visual arts, original art work is the most desirable. Sometimes students may use images from books, magazines, newspapers etc. but the finished product should be more than a direct copy. In the case of classroom entries, projects on a broad theme that foster interpretation rather than result in the same images are recommended. Murals provide great opportunities for participation and creative collaborations.

Usually starting in April students will perform at various venues, the works they have practices either individually or as a group/classroom. Professional Jurors from Winnipeg and Thompson assess their talents and recommend certain performances for awards or scholarships. Visual artists have to give their art work to their school representatives or deliver them to a specified exhibition site.

In visual arts, Jurors, usually respected artists from the arts community spend many hours noting the efforts and skills and providing written compliments/suggestions for each entry. Jurors look over some nearly three hundred works of art. While late entries are accepted, we cannot ensure that they will get adjudicated or considered for awards.

In April of each of year, the school arts festival reps will give participants a note with the time to attend the exhibition site to see the gallery (your work with all the other Thompson artists) and hear the jurors comments. The gallery is open to the public on the Saturday so you can bring friends, relatives to celebrate your efforts.

A number of works are selected each year by the jurors for merit awards. Scholarships are considered at this time but awarded later. At the May Hi-Lites concert selected artwork will be hung in RDPC’s forum and seen during intermission. The Heritage North museum has for a couple of years hosted selected works and exhibited them throughout June-August 2005. This will give a larger audience in Thompson an opportunity to see and appreciate some of the talents emerging in our community.

At the Senior Hi-Lites concert in May, selected artists will be recognized with art supplies awards by grade (Kindergarten to Grade6). Classroom entries may be recognized with plaques and other special awards and scholarships will be given. The INCO Scholarship recipient for Visual Arts designs the cover page for the TFA program for next year. At both May Hi-lites concerts award winning performances in all the disciplines are offered to the community.

Each year we are thankful for the continued support by sponsors and volunteers who contribute to the promotion and organization. . We welcome anyone interested in volunteering and gladly accept sponsorship of all kinds.   Our thanks to those who make things happen for this celebration of the arts in Thompson.
